Things to know, should you be involved in an accident.


Oh no, I was in an accident!

Very few people know precisely what to do in the aftermath of a collision. This knowledge is very important. Whether it is simply a bump in the parking lot or if it is a more serious accident where people are injured, taking the right actions immediately can save lives and improve the outcome for everyone involved. The first important thing if you are involved in car accident is to try to stay calm and concentrated.

What do I need to accomplish at the scene of an accident?

By following these simple steps, you will be able to keep the accident scene as safe as possible. Knowing in advance how to proceed when involved in any type of car accident, helps you stay calm, take the appropriate measures and make the best possible of a difficult, dangerous or even tragic situation.


  1. Immediately and safely pull over to the side of the road.

  2. Turn off your car and turn on your hazard lights.

  3. Check to see if anyone is hurt.

  4. Place flares, cones, or triangles alongside the road to warn approaching motorist.

  5. Contact the police.

  6. Stay at the scene of the accident until the police tell you to leave. Leaving the scene of an accident can be illegal, so it is better to take a careful approach before you act.

  7. You can also photograph the scene of the accident so that you will have documentation about the damage to all vehicles.

  8. Take notes of what you think happened and caused the accident. In your description you should include the location where the accident occurred and, if possible, the road conditions, speed limits, traffic control devices, the weather, the lighting.

  9. Try to avoid discussing what happened with anyone else other than the police. Limit yourself in only describing facts.

  10. Do not make accusations, and do not say that it was your fault.

  11. If you have, or suspect that you have an injury, visit a hospital or a doctor immediately.

What information should I collect?


  • The names, phone numbers, and addresses of all drivers, passengers and witnesses involved in the accident

  • License plate numbers, driver's license numbers

  • Insurance companies of all drivers involved

  • Registered owners of all cars

  • Year, model, make and other relevant information of all cars involved

  • Names and badge numbers of police officers and other emergency personnel

What are your hours of operation?

We are open from 8am to 5pm, Monday through Friday, and 8am to Noon on Saturday. Often, you will see our technicians working well beyond our hours of standard operation in an effort to return your vehicle to you as quickly as possible.
Should your vehicle be disabled outside of our hours of operation, your vehicle may be dropped off any time.

Is there a charge for providing me with an estimate?

Never. Estimates from Schmidt's are always free of charge, and generally can take about 20 minutes to be completed.

How long will repairs take?

Every repair is different. To expedite the process, we begin to order parts once we have been approval to work on your vehicle. In some cases, our technicians will find additional parts in need of replacement, which can add unexpected delays to our expected completion date.

Is there a warranty on the services?

Yes. Schmidts Collision & Glass guarantees all paint & collision workmanship for as long as you own the vehicle. A written warranty is given to you when you pick up your vehicle.

Can you match my vehicles paint color?

Yes. With our extensive mixing system we can precisely match your cars paint. Schmidts Collision and Glass has made a considerable investment in the best paint system available, and our refinish technicians undergo constant training to ensure that our paint will match your vehicles.

Can I wash or wax my car when I get it home?

Yes. We suggest that if you are going to wash your car that you do so with a mild soap and a soft cloth or sponge. For the two weeks we ask that you do not take your vehicle to a commercial car wash, due to the stiff brushes or super jets that can possibly scratch your finish. We also recommend that you do not wax your vehicle for the first 30 days to ensure that your car's paint has had sufficient time to cure. The first 30 days are the most critical for your cars finish. The care you give your vehicle determines how your paint will look many years down the road.

How do I take care of the payments?

No payment is required until you are picking up your vehicle after work is complete, including your deductible (if it applies). We accept Cash, Visa, Mastercard, Discover, Money Orders and Insurance checks.

Can I get a ride home when I drop off my vehicle?

Yes. We have our concierge service. If you live within 5 miles, we will be more than happy to drop you off at your house or work when you leave your vehicle with us. And if need we can also come pick you up when your vehicle's repairs are completed.

Do you offer rental car assistance?

Yes. If you have rental car coverage through insurance, we will use it. We have a HERTZ location in our facility to provide direct assistance. If you do not have rental car coverage, courtesy vehicles are available.

Things to know about Auto Insurance


Does my insurance company pay for repairs directly or do I pay and then receive reimbursement?

It's your choice. By signing a "Direction of Pay" form that we provide, you authorize us to receive payment directly from your insurance company. Most people prefer that method. If you choose that option, you are only responsible for paying us the deductible portion of the repair bill. Again, it's up to you.

Can the Insurance Company make me to go their claims center for an estimate?

No. You can drop the vehicle off at the shop of your choice and they will schedule an insurance adjuster to come out. If you do go to their claims center, accept the estimate and the check they give you. However, do not sign anything that states you accept their check as payment in full. The insurance company realizes the repair shop may call with additional damage costs.

What if an Insurance Company refuses to work with the shop of my choice?

By law, an insurance company cannot refuse your request, and must negotiate with the shop of your choice. It is in both parties' best interest to get your vehicle repaired and back to you as quickly as possible, without charging you extra. The Insurance Commissioner does not tolerate delaying the repair through unlawful practices.

Do I really need to get 3 estimates?

No. New York law states your only obligation is to choose the shop of your choice, and inform the insurance company where the vehicle is going.

If my vehicles frame is damaged, is my vehicle a total loss?

No. Your car is only a total loss if the damages exceed the value of the vehicle, which is determined by your insurance company. With cars changing, most have what is called a unibody (where the frame and body are molded into one) structure. Our technicians, teamed with our state of the art equipment, can return your vehicle to its factory specifications. If the damages are to an extreme that we can't repair it, we simply replace that portion of the vehicle.
